CLOUDY WATER	High PH level Poor filtration High total alkalinity	Lower PH level to 7.2-7.5 Check filter and clean it Lower alkalinity to 90 to 125 ppm	Check PH balance weekly, adjust as needed. If cleaning does not work, change filter element. Have pool store test water monthly.

PROBLEM	CAUSES	SUGGESTIONS	AVOIDANCE
COLORED WATER	Green/cloudy Red/brown Green/ clear Other	Shock pool with chlorine or non-chlorine shock 1 lb. per 10,000 gals. If water does not clear in 48 hrs. take sample to pool store.	Use algaecide weekly to maintain PH level. Shock after rain or very heavy use.

PROBLEM	CAUSES	SUGGESTIONS	AVOIDANCE
ALGAE GROWTH	Green or brown Yellow Black	Chlorine level is to low. Adjust PH level, shock pool as above. Brush pool and walls & run filter 24 to 48 hrs. If problem persist take sample to pool store.	Use algaecide weekly to maintain PH level. Shock after rain or very heavy use.

FOAM IN WATER	Caused by make-up, oils, soap, etc.	Use a de-foaming agent.	Use a non-foaming algaecide or a polyquat algaecide.

CHLORINE SMELL	Not enough chlorine in pool. (free available chlorine)	Shock pool, adjust PH level.	Increase amount of chlorine available on a regular basis.

TOO MUCH CHLORINE IN POOL	Over chlorinated	Stay out until level drops, sunlight and aeration will lower level. WAIT	Reduce amount or frequency of treatment. test daily until you reach a sustainable level of 3 ppm.

EYE OR SKIN IRRITATION	Improper PH level	Adjust PH to 7.2 to 7.6	Check PH. twice a week.

BATH TUB RING	Oils or other contaminants.	Use a mild cleaner or a pool tile cleaner.	Have swimmers bathe before entering pool.

PROBLEM	CAUSES	SUGGESTIONS	AVOIDANCE
SCALE	High calcium High PH level. High Alkalinity	Check PH and alkalinity, adjust PH. have water tested. If still high on hardness, drain 1/2 of pool water and refill.	Check PH more often, use a metal controller. If problem repeats use an alkalinity controller.
